Kickstarter helps artists, musicians, filmmakers, designers, and other creators find the resources and support they need to make their ideas a reality. To date, tens of thousands of creative projects — big and small — have come to life with the support of the Kickstarter community.
Kickstarter is an enormous global community built around creativity and creative projects. Over 10 million people, from every continent on earth, have backed a Kickstarter project.
We built Kickstarter to help bring creative projects to life. We measure our success as a company by how well we achieve that mission, not by the size of our profits. That’s why, in 2015, we became a Benefit Corporation. Benefit Corporations are for-profit companies that are obligated to consider the impact of their decisions on society, not only shareholders. Radically, positive impact on society becomes part of a Benefit Corporation’s legally defined goals.
Since our launch, on April 28, 2009, 10 million people have backed a project, $2.2 Billion has been pledged, and 99,595 projects have been successfully funded.
As this website helps filmmakers, Kickstarter will be reliable for m if I need help in the future on creating my proffesional short film idea to reality. I learnt that they can help you on many different projects such as Art, Fashion, Dance etc. As my budget is low, I will not need Kickstarter to help although this website will be my funding source if my budget is high next time.

Online platforms for Distribution

Here’s how to get your independent movie on Netflix, and some pitfalls you should be mindful of in the process.
The Netflix database can be considered a long list of movies they’re considering for inclusion. How do you get on the Netflix database?
You don’t. They decide.
Unless you have some serious contacts in and around the Netflix arena, your odds are against you but some third party distributors have inroads. Getting one of these distributors on board, however, presents its own challenges and, somewhat ironically, video streaming itself is killing your chance of getting on Netflix—with DVD sales through the floor, distributors are reluctant to take on independent movies in this market since the returns from Netflix are so low.
Now, that’s the depressing news out of the way. There is an indie distribution company (owned by IndieGoGo) that can help get your independent movie on Netflix and all of the other major streaming services: Distribber.
Distribber does charge a fee of up to $1,600, but you keep all rights to your movie as well as 100% of the revenue it goes on to make.
It’ll behoove you to do a big marketing push and ask literally everyone you know to do this; not only will it improve your chances of getting your independent movie on Netflix, but it’ll also increase the amount you’ll get for it if and when they make you an offer.
How much will this be? This is anyone’s guess, since it depends hugely on the demand (see above), but it’s usually less that you’d hoped for. Expect a four figure deal, and praise the stars if you get five figures.
Don’t focus solely on one streaming service—hit them all.

I find out that it is not easy to get your short film on Netflix as it is one of the most popular movie streaming service in the UK. Although 'Distribber' can help me put my film on Netflix but it could charge me the fee up to $1,600. So for now I will stick to YouTube as it is free for me to upload. As YouTube is an international distribution, this increased the audience from around the world.

Here’s how to get your independent movie on Netflix, and some pitfalls you should be mindful of in the process.
It’s All About the Database
It probably won’t come as a surprise to hear you can’t just email someone at Netflix and ask them to pop your work on the homepage. Getting your independent movie on Netflix starts with one key step, and unfortunately it’s a step you have very little control of: get on the Netflix database. The Netflix database can be considered a long list of movies they’re considering for inclusion. How do you get on the Netflix database?
You don’t. They decide.
Unless you have some serious contacts in and around the Netflix arena, your odds are against you but some third party distributors have inroads. Next Step: Raise an Army
Assuming you’ve made it onto the Netflix database (congratulations), you’ll need to prove there’s demand for your independent movie. In order to demonstrate this, people will have to request the movie in their Netflix queue (known as the ‘queue demand’).It’ll behoove you to do a big marketing push and ask literally everyone you know to do this; not only will it improve your chances of getting your independent movie on Netflix, but it’ll also increase the amount you’ll get for it if and when they make you an offer.
How Does the Money Work, Anyway?
Unlike most of the other platforms, Netflix doesn’t pay you per view since it isn’t contingent on ad revenue. Instead, it pays you a one-off fee for a license (usually lasting one or two years) to stream your movie to an unlimited audience. How much will this be? This is anyone’s guess, since it depends hugely on the demand (see above), but it’s usually less that you’d hoped for. Expect a four figure deal, and praise the stars if you get five figures.
Increase Your Chances
While the queue demand appears to be the biggest factor for success in Netflix’s nebulous decision process, there is some evidence to suggest other considerations are made. A legitimate IMDB listing, a great score on Rotten Tomatoes, and wide press coverage may help get your independent movie on Netflix, and should be on your to-do list regardless. The Bigger Picture
A wise approach to film distribution is to remove any and every barrier to entry between your movie and a potential viewer as possible, and you need a very good reason not to do this.Don’t focus solely on one streaming service—hit them all.

Draft Proposal
= Correction/Mistakes
Introduction
Introduction
The film is about two boys hanging out together on a random Saturday night. They were casually scrolling through their Twitter until they saw a trend of a new scary game challenge. As they don't think it's real, one suggested they should play this little "game" which got out of hand. They are now being stalked and taunted by an unknown presence named 'Charlie'.
The hook is the two boys playing a legitimately terrifying “game” (which was a Twitter trend that has teens trying to summon a demon named Charlie). The twist is the two boys is now being haunted by a demon. I thought of many different tagline for my short film such as "Charlie wants to play...", "All hell breaks loose when Charlie wants to play" etc.
I was influenced by the movie 'Ouija', Ouija is known as a scary sleepover game which led me to think about other scary sleepover games like 'Bloody Mary, Sandbags, Candyman, Light as a Feather Stiff as a Board, Cat Scratch etc. Then this made me think back in May 2015, I remember there was this scary game that was trending on many Social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube etc. This scary game was known as 'Charlie Charlie Challenge', which can be a new scary sleepover game. This led me to come up with the concept of my short film.

Film Rating
If the 'British Board of Film Classification' were to examine and age rate my short film, I think my short film will be classified as 12A and not 15 or 12. Reasons for this is because there won't be much strong violence in the short film and won't be any strong language. Some horror films passed the 12/12A category because their tone are not not disturbing and the horror sequences are not repeated many times. But the tone in my short film will be dark, unsettling scary tone which might disturb the younger audience so it is less likely to be passed 12A and will be pushed up a category from 12A to 15. There won't any problems because my short film won't be rated by BBFC as I will be uploading it to YouTube.
Primary Research
To able to find my target audience, I will need to go through the comment section and click on their profile to find out their age and gender. These two screenshots aabove show you the short film "2AM: The Smiling Man" has over 3.7 million views, 29K likes and only 2K dislikes. And also to show you how many comments have been posted on this video, it has nearly 6,000 comments. As I was searching through the comment section on a short film, I clicked on couple profiles as you can see in the screenshots below.
Due to my research I found out that the usual age for audience to be watching a horror movie is 15+ as it includes violence which can be disturbing to younger viewers. The young audience usually want to try new things and experiment emotions and feelings, they want to experience life for themselves and make their own choices and be excited by many things. Horror films usually excite young audiences more than older audiences, the audiences are often a groups of friends rather than just themselves. Males are more likely to a fan of horror movies than females, they tend to like the thrill of violence, blood etc. Three films that is similar to my short film I picked are all rated 15 by BBFC. This research has helped me because it has given me answers of who should be my target audience for a horror short film. My main primary target audience will be 15 to 24 years old and my secondary target audience will be 25 to 40 years old as they may watch horror films as well.
I was also looking through the comments for some feedback that may help me on what to do for my one minute short film. I screenshot some examples, 'Bob Parker' prefer little girl than a man as Bob think it will more scarier. This made me think that maybe I should include a little girl as 'Charlie' in the short film to make it more scarier and creepier as Bob Parker think it will be creepier. Although Charlie is a male demon, the name Charlie also can be a girl name so it still make sense. In another comment, 'fraud1980' said that the costume was took some horror off as the suit was bright, this will make me try to avoid loud costumes that would take off horror so it wouldn't ruined the film. Last comment by '5upernova Music', he said that the jump scare at the end made him jump, this make me want to include jump scares in my horror movies. But I can't make it obvious and easily expected otherwise my audience wouldn't even flinch at all.
Secondary Research
My idea was based on a scary game trend back May 2015 so I did some research on three films that is similar to my idea. The first film I looked at was 'Ouija'. This film is the same genre as I am making and it both have a popular scary game scene, the storyline are quite similar to each other as the characters were being chased by 2 unknown presence, one with the mouth sewn and the other with black eyes and a gaping mouth. The film was release in 2014 on Halloween and had a budget of $5 million and made almost $20 million on the opening weekend and made $102 million overall worldwide. It did received many negative reviews more than good reviews, some say the acting, story and the scares was good and some say it was the worst horror movie they've ever seen. Apparently 'Finding Nemo' were more scarier than 'Ouija' which was said by a super reviewer from Rotten Tomatoes. So this made me think, to make my short film to meet the reviewers' standards, I will have to make my short film dark and unsettling scary tone to keep the audience on their edge of their seat with unexpected jump scares.

The second film I looked at was 'Paranormal Activity 3'. This film has the same genre as the short film I am making, like I said before it has a popular scary game scene somewhere in the movie. This popular scary game is known as 'Bloody Mary' which is a terrifying scary game. The storyline is almost very similar to each other becuase in 'Paranormal Activity 3', a invisible demon terrorizes two little girls after playing a scary game challenge 'Bloody Mary'. The film was release on 21st October 2011 and made over $52 million with the budget of $5 million. It grossed out over $104 million just in the USA. This film is the highest grossing film in the Paranormal Activity series, it recieved more positive reviews than negative. Most negative reviews was complaining about the scenes in the trailer isn't in the final cut of the film. Many thought it was the scariest movie they have ever watched, it was a film that scared them and kept them more tense and on edge. The trailer editor used this method as a trick by not using the scenes in the trailer to make it more scarier for the audience. The audience would know when things were going to happen as they seen the scary parts in the trailer and ruined the scare for themselves, so in this movie when they are watching it, they will be waiting for something that not going to happen. This is what make the movie scary as they made jump scares more possible and not expected. To make it scary for the audience, I will try not to make the jump scares easily expected in my short film to make it more tense so it would put the audience on the edge of their seat.
In the final film I looked at was 'The Possession' which came out on the 31st of August 2012. The storyline is not very similar to my story at all except both having a demon in our film. I chose this film because it have the same genre as the film I am making. During the release on the 31st August 2012, they made over $17 million on the opening weekend with the budget of $14 million. They made $85 million overall worldwide, made $48 million in the USA alone. The movie weren't for everyone, some hated it and some loved it. Some say it was the best scary exorcism film they have seen, well written and acted but unfortunately the movie received more negative reviews than positive. Some said it was boring as the story line is slow and the demon weren't remotely scary. They said the movie wasn't scary as it was obvious that they could tell what was going to happen in the next five minute. They said it was a waste of money, they were laughing at the part that were supposed to be scary they thought it was comedy. They also think the music in the background wasn't good. Even though the storyline is completely different to mine, the negative reviews could be the same. To avoid this I would have to make the demon much scarier and creepier, make the story line unpredictable so the audience wouldn't able to tell what is going to happen next and find the horror suitable soundtrack for my short film. As my short film is 1 minute, I will have to make the storyline fast and not boring which mean no backstory.
USP stand for 'Unique Selling Point'. They attract new customer by offering them something their competitors can't or don't offer. For example, Domino's "30 mintues or it's free" promise.
I am confident that this film will be successful because it will be reaching my target audience expectation. As my audience are teens and young adults, this short was based on social media's trend so they will remember the trend back in May 2015, the game that was played by thousands of young people where they tried to summon the devil. This will be the first 'Charlie Charlie' movie, I also will include the hook and the twist in this film. The structure I will be using is non-linear and the style of editing will be continuity.
Budget
As I will be able to borrow a camera and tripod from the school's media department, this mean I don't have to buy a camera and equipment along with it. I also will not need to pay to hire a editing suite too because there is a mac editing suite in school which I am allowed to use anytime during my free lessons and I also have an editing software at home I can use which is similar to 'Final Cut Pro X'. This editing software is known as 'Sony Vegas 12'.
£50:
£25 for Props & Makeup
£10 for Transportation (Although we have a free bus pass, we will use the £10 for something else such as props or food if not needed for travelling)
£15 for Food & Drink (99p Store, Poundland etc.)
The £50 will come from my own pocket money.
Regulation & Certification
As my one minute short film will be uploading to YouTube and won't be shown in cinemas or onto DVDs, this mean the BBFC will not regulate my one minute short film as they don't regulate YouTube videos. But if the BBFC were to regulate my short film, I will say it will be 15 because the tone in my short film will be dark, unsettling scary tone to build suspense and put my audience on the edge of their seats. This will disturb the younger viewer so therefore my short film will be rated 15.
Distribution
I decided to submit my short film at 'FilmOneFest as it is the suitable short film festival because it does one minute short film only. It is also easy for me to submit as all I have to do is to go on their website and I will able to see "Submissions are now open for FilmOneFest 2016". It tell me when the festival takes place which is the third Saturday of July (16th July 2016). It also tell me how to submit and when the submission deadline is (May 15th 2016), I have plenty of time to submit my short film.

At the moment, I am not ready to show my short film on Netflix as I am not professional yet. Even if I was professional, I would still have get 'Distribber' to help me put my film on Netflix but it could charge me the fee up to $1,600. So for now I will stick to YouTube as it is free for me to upload and is another international distribution so I am able to show my work to range of people.

- Avoid Repetition & Punchline Twists
- Exciting New Techniques & Style

These tips are very important as it will help me on how to make a successful short film. I learn that I will need a strong beginning which mean I will need a hook that will grab the audience's attention, I will also need a good script and actors otherwise it can let the film down. I will have to make it short to keep the viewer's attention but it's not a problem as I am doing a one minute short film. Last but not least, I should have an original idea that show creativity and interest so I would be able to make it a good short film.

Short Film Festivals Entry

Film festivals are events staged by universities, private organizations, local governments, arts associations and/or film societies. They provide an opportunity for unknown filmmakers to get their movies in front of a real live audience and to have their films reviewed by professional critics. Filmmakers whose movies get accepted into a festival also get valuable press attention and exposure to prospective agents and buyers, not to mention a sometimes sizable cash award if they win. Film festivals celebrate the art of the film and champion the artists who produce it.

Film regulation/Certification
Examiners from 'British Board of Film Classification' (BBFC) watch films and videos all the way through and award an age rating and insight to each one. They reach an age rating by applying the standards and criteria contained in their Classification Guidelines. They examines and age rates films and videos before they are released.
They did this to protect children from unsuitable and even harmful content in films and videos and to give consumers information they might need about a particular film or video before deciding whether or not to view it. The same process exists for DVDs and Blu-rays.
They look at issues such as discrimination, drugs, horror, dangerous and easily imitable behavior, language, nudity, sex, and violence when making decisions.
Their decisions on the age rating of DVDs and Blu-rays can occasionally be stricter than at the cinema because there is a higher risk of underage viewing in the home and a greater potential for watching scenes out of context.

Article: The Reasons Those Scary Games You Played At Sleepovers Actually Worked
After looking at this article and the author said these sleepover games freaked them out, this made me come up with the concept of my one minute short film, couple of friends were having a sleepover on Halloween night, one suggested that they should play a little scary game but the situation got out of hand as it couldn't be controlled any more. There a different range of scary games challenge including Bloody Mary, Ouija and Charlie Charlie etc.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Short Film: MAMA
This video gave me couple ideas to come up with my short film plot, e.g at the minute '2:38' & '3:18', where the two little girl's mother is a monster, it represent an alcohol abusive mother. It is their "mother" but she is a monster when she comes home from drinking, maybe a symbolic of how kids see abusive parents. (YouTube comment). This remind of the movie 'Coraline' because the parents are similar as they both creepy.
Although it's not similar to my idea but the way 'Mama' was chasing her daughters/the little girls pretty fast, this gave me an idea that I could have someone with scary demon possession inside them chasing people stutter running really fast, possibly male although I prefer female as they are scarier especially a little girl but female alway get possessed in horror movies and this what lacked originality even though I did not completely made this idea up.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Twitter Trend/Article: Charlie Charlie Challenge (Charlie Charlie Challenge - what is the spooky craze, and what is the explanation for it?)
If it all gets too creepy, here's how to "say goodbye" to Charlie:

After looking at the scary sleepover game article, this led me to think about other scary sleepover games like 'Sandbags, Candyman, Light as a Feather Stiff as a Board, Cat Scratch etc.

Article: The Reasons Those Scary Games You Played At Sleepovers Actually Worked
There’s a bathroom in my house I
can’t go into after dark because I’m still scared I’ll get pulled into the
mirror by Bloody Mary.
At every sleepover, someone would
suggest playing Bloody Mary, a legitimately terrifying “game,” and off we’d go
sneaking into the kitchen to find a suitable candle.
If it wasn’t Bloody Mary, we’d play
rocks-paper-scissor to decide who would become “light as a feather, stiff as a
board.”
These classic sleepover games totally
freaked me out and made me wonder if real ghosts and spirits were actually
causing all these creepy things to happen.
As an older and slightly less naive
person, I can acknowledge most of the sleepover phenomena was less magic and
more science.
This is what made your sleepover
games work:
Light as a feather, stiff as a board…
Directions: One friend lies down flat on the floor. Everybody else sits around
and puts a finger or two under that person’s body. The circle starts chanting
“light as a feather, stiff as a board” and counts to three.
Supposed outcome: On three, the group should be able to lift the center person off
the floor using just a finger or two.
What actually happens: By chanting and counting to three, everybody in the circle is in
sync and makes the lift attempt at the exact same moment.
This means weight is equally
distributed across everyone, and your fingers only have to hold so much weight.
Your fingers are actually pretty strong and can hold up a lot, so it’s not that
hard to lift your friend.
Bloody Mary
Directions: The directions vary, but in my experience, you take a lit candle
into a dark room with a mirror and repeat “Bloody Mary” 13 times.
Supposed outcome: A woman covered in blood will appear in the mirror and try to take
your soul.
What actually happens: Your brain is an assh*le. Seriously. There’s this thing called the
Troxler Effect where if you stare at a point for a while, everything else will
fade away. Then your brain will start filling in the outside space with a
distortion of what you’re staring at.
So if you’re staring at your face in
the mirror, your brain will start filling the outer area of your vision with a
distortion of your face… or a monster. This is especially pronounced in
low-light spaces.
In an experiment where people stared
into a mirror in low light for 10 minutes, 48 percent of people said they saw
“fantastical and monstrous beings” in the mirror. Thanks, assh*le brain.
Ouija
Directions: Put your hands on the ouija board. Ask ~the spirits~ a question.
Supposed outcome: The spirits will move your hands to form the answers.
What actually happens: Ouija works thanks to the “ideomotor effect.” Basically, your
subconscious is making your hands move, even if you aren’t consciously directing
it. But yeah, it’s all you, not spirits.
http://elitedaily.com/life/culture/scary-sleepover-games-worked/1255777/After looking at this article and the author said these sleepover games freaked them out, this made me come up with the concept of my one minute short film, couple of friends were having a sleepover on Halloween night, one suggested that they should play a little scary game but the situation got out of hand as it couldn't be controlled any more. There a different range of scary games challenge including Bloody Mary, Ouija and Charlie Charlie etc.

Twitter Trend/Article: Charlie Charlie Challenge (Charlie Charlie Challenge - what is the spooky craze, and what is the explanation for it?)
A strange new game is taking over Twitter, fuelled by speculation that its players can connect with a dead Mexican spirit known as Charlie.
The Charlie Charlie Challenge has been played by thousands of young people after a number of videos purported to show supernatural goings-on.
The game entails placing two pencils on a piece of paper in the shape of the cross with the words 'yes' and 'no'. Participants then repeat the phrase "Charlie, Charlie can we play?" in order to connect with the demon.
If Charlie is there the pencils will move to indicate his answer.
One reddit user believes he has uncovered a full explanation of the game:
"The best explanation I have found is here.
You’ve probably heard of using a Ouija board to contact spirits, but I bet you haven’t heard of using pencils to have your questions answered by supernatural beings! The Pencil Game, also called “Charlie, Charlie,” is a traditional Mexican ritual wherein players (usually children) are said to contact the spirit of a child named Charlie.
To begin the game, both players must chant: “Charlie, Charlie, can we play?” If the pencils move inward or up, the answer is yes. If they move outward or down, the answer is no. If one side goes one way and the other side goes a different way, it means maybe or the question can’t be answered at this time. You can then ask the spirit of Charlie yes or no questions, and he will respond by moving the pencils. Charlie is kind of like the spirit world version of a Magic 8 ball. To end the game, both players must chant: “Charlie, Charlie, can we stop?” After the pencils move, both players drop all of the pencils on the floor to break contact with Charlie."
Needless to say the reaction to the craze has been mixed:

After looking at the scary sleepover game article, this led me to think about other scary sleepover games like 'Sandbags, Candyman, Light as a Feather Stiff as a Board, Cat Scratch etc.
